Geropsychiatry
Elderly patients with acute geropsychiatric problems requiring
inpatient care are admitted to the Traditions Unit, a 20-bed
acute geropsychiatric ward at the Southwest Regional Medical
Center, a 70-bed community hospital located about 10 miles
south of the UAMS campus. Lou Ann Eads, MD, assistant professor
of Psychology and Geriatrics at UAMS, is medical director
of this unit. Dr. Pham Liem makes rounds on patients on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays weekly.
The Geropsychiatric Inpatient Service employs an interdisciplinary
approach to the evaluation and treatment of this particular
patient population. Patients in the unit suffer from dementia
with behavior problems, delirium, psychosis, or severe depression;
or they may have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, reaching
old age with other associated chronic medical conditions.
In addition to staff physicians, team members include social
workers, nurses, a psychologist, a pharmacist, and a dietician.
