UAMS
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is the state's
only comprehensive academic health center. Founded in 1879
as a proprietary medical school by a group of eight physicians
with 22 students, the institution is now a part of the University
of Arkansas System with about 1875 students in five academic
units -- the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Health
Related Professions, and the Graduate School.
The university pursues its three-fold mission -- to teach,
to search, to serve -- through educational programs in the
Colleges, biomedical and biotechnology research initiatives,
and clinical programs for patients at University
Hospital and its affiliated clinics. University Hospital
is the only hospital in Arkansas to be named to U.S. News
& World Report list of "Americas
Best Hospitals."
UAMS is a state-assisted institution, and its operation is
funded by payments for clinical services, tuition and fees,
state appropriation, sponsored research support, and philanthropy.
The main campus is located at 4301 W. Markham Street, Little
Rock, Arkansas, 72205-7199. For more information call (501)
